Pollarding Assessment in Fordingbridge

Not every tree should be pollarded, and not every existing pollard has been managed correctly. A pollarding assessment from Future Trees & Garden Maintenance gives you a professional opinion on whether your tree is a suitable candidate for pollarding, what the best approach would be, and what the long-term management plan should look like. Our NPTC qualified arborists visit your tree in Fordingbridge or the surrounding SP6 area and provide clear, practical advice based on the tree's species, age, condition and history. Free same day quotes available.

More Information

Assessing Suitability for Pollarding

The first question in any pollarding assessment is whether the species is suitable. Trees that respond well to pollarding include willows, limes, hornbeams, planes and certain fruit trees. Species that do not tolerate it, such as most conifers, large mature beeches and many ornamentals, can be seriously damaged or killed by pollarding. We also consider the age and existing condition of the tree. A pollard that was established when the tree was young is very different from attempting to pollard a mature tree that has never been cut in this way, and the risks and outcomes are quite different.

Assessing Existing Pollards

Many properties in the Fordingbridge area have trees that were pollarded years or decades ago but have since been left unmanaged. An over-grown neglected pollard can develop very heavy, poorly attached regrowth branches that create a significant safety risk, particularly in high winds. A pollarding assessment evaluates the current condition of these branches, the structural integrity of the pollard framework, and sets out the options for restoring management or, where necessary, recommending removal. This kind of assessment can prevent serious accidents.

A Plan for Long-Term Management

Pollarding is a commitment. A tree that is pollarded correctly will produce vigorous regrowth that needs managing on a regular cycle for the rest of its life. Our pollarding assessment includes advice on the appropriate cutting cycle for the species and location, what the eventual goal shape should look like, and how to sequence the work if the tree needs a staged restoration programme. We want you to be fully informed before any work starts so you can make the right decision for your tree and your property.

We carried out a pollarding assessment on a row of very large willows beside a pond on a rural property near Ibsley. The willows had been pollarded historically but had not been cut for over 15 years. The regrowth was so heavy and so long that several of the trees had developed a dangerous lean towards the pond and a nearby outbuilding. Our assessment recommended a staged restoration over two years, starting with the most structurally compromised trees. We then carried out the first phase of work, bringing the willows back to a safe, manageable state.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my tree needs a pollarding assessment near Fordingbridge?

If you have a tree that you think may have been pollarded in the past but has not been cut for many years, or if you are considering pollarding a tree and are unsure whether it is suitable, a pollarding assessment is a sensible first step. Future Trees & Garden Maintenance offers free same day quotes and site visits in the Fordingbridge area. Call us on 07401 310677.

Can any tree be pollarded in the Fordingbridge area?

No. Pollarding is only suitable for certain species that regenerate well from severe cutting. In the Fordingbridge area this includes willows, limes and hornbeams, which are common. Trees such as conifers, birch and large mature oaks are generally not suitable candidates. Our arborists can tell you definitively whether your specific tree is appropriate during a site assessment.

What happens if a neglected pollard is not properly managed near Fordingbridge?

An unmanaged pollard develops increasingly heavy and structurally weak branches from the pollard framework. Over time this creates a real safety risk, as the branches can fail under their own weight or in high winds. In extreme cases the whole tree can become structurally compromised. Future Trees & Garden Maintenance has restored many neglected pollards across the SP6 area and can advise on the safest and most cost-effective approach for your trees.
