More Information

Planting Schemes Designed for This Landscape

The Fordingbridge area sits at the junction of the New Forest, the Avon Valley and the chalk downlands to the north. This creates a varied range of soil types and growing conditions. Sandy acid soils, heavy clays, free-draining chalk soils and damp riverside conditions all call for different plants. We know this landscape well and we choose plants that will thrive in the conditions on your particular plot. There is no point installing a beautiful scheme of plants that struggle and die within a year because they were not suited to the soil or aspect.

Trees, Hedges and Structural Planting

A garden without structure can feel flat and unfinished. Trees, hedges and large shrubs provide the backbone of a garden, create seasonal interest, provide shade, privacy and shelter, and support wildlife. We source and plant native and ornamental trees of all sizes, establish new hedges from bare-root or pot-grown stock, and plant large shrubs and climbers to build the structure of your garden. As tree specialists, we are particularly well-placed to advise on the right trees for your garden and to plant them correctly for long-term success.

Complete Garden Transformations

For customers who want a whole new garden from scratch, or a major overhaul of an existing one, we manage the whole project. This typically starts with clearance of the existing garden, then any hard landscaping such as paths, walls or fencing, followed by soil preparation and finally planting. We can work from an agreed design or simply from a brief conversation about what you want to use the space for and how you want it to feel. We aim to create gardens that are manageable for the people who will be living with them, not show gardens that require a full-time gardener to maintain.

We completed a full planting and landscaping project for a newly built house on the edge of Fordingbridge where the garden was effectively a building site when we arrived. We built new raised beds from reclaimed sleepers, prepared the borders, laid a new lawn and planted a mix of native shrubs, ornamental grasses and young trees chosen for the sandy soil and the sunny, sheltered aspect. Two years on, the garden looks established and full of life, exactly as the owners had hoped.

Frequently Asked Questions

What plants grow well in the Fordingbridge area?

The Fordingbridge area has sandy, free-draining soils in many places, which suits drought-tolerant plants, ornamental grasses, lavender, rosemary, cistus, and acid-loving shrubs like heather and pieris. In damper spots near the Avon Valley, astilbe, hostas, and waterside planting such as iris and ligularia perform well. Future Trees & Garden Maintenance knows the local conditions and will recommend plants that will genuinely thrive on your plot.

Can you plant trees as part of a landscaping project near Fordingbridge?

Yes. As experienced arborists as well as landscape gardeners, Future Trees & Garden Maintenance is particularly skilled at sourcing and planting trees correctly for long-term success. We plant ornamental and native trees of all sizes across the Fordingbridge area, from small garden specimens to larger parkland and boundary trees. All trees are planted with the right preparation and staking for their size and location.

How long does a landscaping project take in the Fordingbridge area?

Project timescales in the Fordingbridge area vary enormously depending on the scope of work. A single border replant might take a day. A full garden transformation including clearance, hard landscaping and planting can take several weeks. We give you a realistic programme when we visit for your free same day quote and keep you informed throughout the project.
