Deadwooding in Fordingbridge

Deadwooding is the removal of dead, dying and structurally weakened branches from a living tree. It is an important safety measure and a key part of proper tree management. Dead branches can fall at any time, often without warning, and the consequences can be serious when they fall on people, vehicles or property below. Future Trees & Garden Maintenance carries out deadwooding on domestic and commercial trees across Fordingbridge and the SP6 area. Our NPTC qualified arborists identify all hazardous deadwood and remove it safely. Free same day quotes available.

More Information

Why Dead Branches Fall Without Warning

Live branches break when the stress placed on them exceeds the strength of the wood. Dead branches lack this warning system. As the wood dries out and loses structural integrity, it can fail suddenly under its own weight, in wind, or even on a calm day as decay progresses. Trees with heavy deadwood above paths, driveways, cars, play areas or outbuildings should be assessed as a priority. In our experience across the Fordingbridge area, many properties have trees with significant deadwood that their owners are unaware of until they look carefully from the right angle.

What Deadwooding Involves

Deadwooding begins with a thorough inspection of the tree's canopy from the ground and, where necessary, from within the tree using climbing equipment. Our arborists identify all deadwood above a certain diameter, as well as hanging branches, stubs and any wood that appears structurally compromised by disease or decay. These are removed at the nearest natural growth point and lowered to the ground. After deadwooding, the canopy looks cleaner and greener, and the tree is significantly safer.

Regular Deadwooding as Part of a Maintenance Plan

Deadwood is a natural and ongoing feature of mature trees. As trees age, some branches die back naturally as part of the tree's growth cycle. This means deadwooding is not a one-off job but an ongoing maintenance task. We recommend that trees overhanging public areas, access routes and buildings be inspected and deadwooded on a regular cycle, typically every three to five years. We can include deadwooding as part of a broader tree management programme for properties in the Fordingbridge area with multiple large trees.

We carried out deadwooding on a row of mature oaks along a private track near Godshill after the property owner noticed a large dead limb hanging in one of the trees during the winter. On inspection, two of the five oaks had significant deadwood that needed removing. One branch was over four metres long and had become detached at the union but was still resting in the canopy. We removed everything safely and the track is now much safer for vehicles and walkers to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my tree needs deadwooding in the Fordingbridge area?

Look for branches that have no leaves in summer when surrounding branches are in full leaf. Brittle, peeling bark, fungal brackets on branches, or branches that have clearly snapped but are held up in the canopy are all signs of deadwood. If you are unsure, Future Trees & Garden Maintenance can carry out a free inspection for customers in the Fordingbridge and SP6 area.

Is deadwooding the same as pruning near Fordingbridge?

They are related but different. Pruning shapes and manages a tree by removing live wood to influence its growth and form. Deadwooding specifically targets dead, dying and dangerous material within the canopy. Both operations are carried out by qualified arborists and often done at the same time. Future Trees & Garden Maintenance can advise you on which service or combination of services is right for your trees in the Fordingbridge area.

Does deadwooding harm the tree near Fordingbridge?

No. Removing dead wood does not harm a living tree. In fact it can benefit the tree by removing material that may harbour disease and fungi, and by reducing the weight of dead material in the canopy. The tree seals over the cut points naturally. Deadwooding carried out by our NPTC qualified arborists in the Fordingbridge area follows best practice to ensure no unnecessary harm to the living tissue of the tree.
