Canopy lifting, sometimes called crown lifting, is the removal of the lower branches of a tree to raise the height of the crown above ground level. This is one of the most commonly requested arborist services across Fordingbridge and the SP6 area, and Future Trees & Garden Maintenance carries it out regularly on domestic and roadside trees. Canopy lifting improves clearance for vehicles, pedestrians and garden machinery, allows more light at ground level, and can open up views from buildings. Free same day quotes are always available.

More Information
As trees mature, their lower branches extend downward and outward, gradually reducing clearance at ground level. This is natural growth behaviour but it can become a practical problem, particularly on trees overhanging driveways, parking areas, footpaths, or close to the frontage of a house. Canopy lifting raises the effective crown of the tree to a set clearance height, typically 2.5 metres for pedestrians, 5.2 metres for larger vehicles. It does not change the overall size or appearance of the tree significantly, making it one of the least intrusive ways of managing a tree around access and structures.
Canopy lifting involves removing selected lower branches back to the main stem or to a suitable lateral branch. We identify the branches to be removed based on the desired clearance height, their size and their position relative to the structure of the tree. Large branches are removed in sections to prevent tearing at the attachment point, and all cuts are made at natural growth points to allow the tree to seal over effectively. We avoid removing more than the bottom third of the crown in a single visit to minimise stress on the tree.
Trees overhanging private driveways and public roads are a common source of calls for our Fordingbridge team. Low branches can scratch vehicles, obscure sight lines and create hazards in high winds. In some cases, local highways authorities request that roadside trees be lifted to meet minimum clearance standards. If you have received a notice from the council about a tree on your land, or simply want to improve clearance on your driveway or track, Future Trees & Garden Maintenance can advise you on the right approach and carry out the work to the required standard.
Future Trees & Garden Maintenance was founded over 20 years ago right here in the Fordingbridge area. What started as a small tree surgery business has grown into a full tree and garden maintenance service covering the SP6 postcode and beyond. We are proud to be NPTC qualified, which means our arborists meet the nationally recognised standard for safe and competent tree work. We have worked in back gardens in Breamore, along the lanes of Woodgreen, on large rural estates near Rockbourne, and on roadside trees throughout the New Forest fringe. We know this landscape well and we care about keeping it beautiful and safe.

We recently lifted the canopy on a pair of large beeches at the entrance to a property near Bickton. The trees had been growing unchecked for years and the lower branches were now sweeping down to windscreen height on the driveway. We raised the crown to over five metres on the driveway side, transforming the entrance from an obstacle course to a welcoming, open approach, while the trees themselves remained as impressive and full as ever from the road.

STILL NOT SURE?
British Standard guidance suggests that no more than the bottom third of the crown should be removed in a single canopy lifting operation. The actual height achievable depends on the tree species and how it has grown. We will advise you on a realistic and healthy clearance height during your free site visit in the Fordingbridge area.
Canopy lifting carried out within the recommended limits by qualified arborists does not cause lasting harm to a healthy tree. Trees adapt well to the loss of lower branches, and the cuts seal over in time. Future Trees & Garden Maintenance follows best practice guidance and will only recommend canopy lifting where it is appropriate for the size and species of your tree.
Street trees are managed by the local council. You should not carry out works on council-owned trees without permission. If you have a concern about a street tree near your property in Fordingbridge, contact New Forest District Council or Hampshire County Council depending on the location. Future Trees & Garden Maintenance can carry out canopy lifting on trees on private land throughout the SP6 area.
